Happy Birthday Leu Gardens- Join Mayor Dyer and City Commissioners for a tree planting/dedication at 10:00 am by Mary Jane's Rose Garden. Free tree seedlings will be handed out after the ceremony by the horticultural staff who can answer your gardening questions. 

Come celebrate Leu Garden's fiftieth birthday. It’s all free including garden admission!

Take I-4 East, Turn right at exit #85 (old 43) onto Princeton Street. Princeton will dead end at Mills (Hwy 17-92). Turn right and go to the second traffic light (Virginia Drive). Turn left onto Virginia and go approximately one mile, following the curve to the left. Main gate is located on the left. Take the left turn lane into the Gardens.

From North and Northeast - Daytona, Altamonte Springs:

Take I-4 West, Turn left at exit #85 (old 43) onto Princeton Street. Princeton will dead end at Mills (Hwy 17-92). Turn right and go to the second traffic light (Virginia Drive). Turn left onto Virginia and go approximately one mile, following the curve to the left. Main gate is located on the left. Take the left turn lane into the Gardens.

From the Southeast - Orlando International Airport area:

Take Hwy 436 (Semoran Blvd.) north and turn left onto Hwy 50 (Colonial). Turn right on Bennett and turn left onto Corrine Drive. Continue on Corrine until the start of a left hand curve which then becomes Forest. The Gardens entrance is on the right.

Paws for Peace Walk at Blue Jacket Park- Baldwin Park

The 2nd Annual Paws for Peace Walk is the premier event of the Paws Campaign. Just under a mile’s length, the Walk is a fun and leisurely stroll for families, friends and animal lovers alike.
Following the walk, there will be a festival packed with games, music, a magician, dog agility show, and many more fun activities! All dollars raised will go towards the construction and ongoing operations of the Harbor House’s Paws Kennel and awareness for the link between animal abuse and domestic abuse.

Avalon Park's Doglympics , November 5 and 6, 2011

The 2011 Avalon Park Doglympics has expanded its program of Contests and Races. The event consists of a vast array of Novelty Classes and Races designed to give everyone in the family, including mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, kids, and family pet an opportunity to shine and win an award.
Event Schedule for Saturday November 5, 2011
Companion Dog Novelty Events

• 9:00 a.m. Fastest Recall: Two teams of 4 dogs paired up to race against each other, with the winning team advancing to the next round. Handlers walk across the field, approximately 10 yards away while their dogs are instructed to Sit and Stay at the start line. The command to go is given and the first dog across the finish line wins. If the dog needs assistance to stay, the handler can hold the dog at the start line. Any team that has three false starts will be disqualified.

• 9:20 a.m. Longest Stay: For well-trained dogs, this event is a breeze! Handlers command the dogs staying either a Sit or Sit/Down position. Winner is the dog that stays in the position the longest.

• 9:40 a.m. Filla Fuller Brush Shedding: Handlers work with partners; handlers have one minute to brush their dogs and fill a bag with the hair. One handler brushes the dog, removes hair from brush and passes hair to second handler who then takes hair and places it in a plastic bag. The team who collects the most hair in allotted time wins. (Note: handlers use their own grooming tools, no Furminators! Plastic bags will be provided by event.

• 10:00 a.m. 6 Legged Egg & Spoon Race: Handler holds an egg on a spoon in his/her mouth while running together with his/her dog for a distance of 50 meters. Winner is first team to make it to the finish line without dropping spoon and/or egg.

• 10:20 a.m. Potato Sack Race: Dog is placed at the Start/Finish Line while Handler, standing in a potato sack, is 50 meters across the field. At Go, the dog races across the field to Handler. Handler then has to jump back to Start/Finish Line in the sack. First one across the line wins.

• 10:50 a.m. Luciano Pavarotti Sing Off: What more is there to say? Handlers can use any non-physical means to get their dogs to sing! Winner is based on popular vote.

• 11:10 a.m. Musical Chairs: Does your Dog have rhythm? This is musical chairs, but for your dog! When the music starts, Handlers and their Dogs on leashes, walk in a circle. When the music stops, Handlers command their dogs to sit. Last dog to sit is out. This will continue until 3 dogs remain. Final 3 will compete for medals.

• 11:30 a.m. Babe Ruth Obedience Baseball: Batter Up! Handler and Dog stand at Home Plate. When the Judge says “Go” Dog and Handler move to 1st Base. Handler commands dog to sit. As soon as the dog sits, the handler and dog move to 2nd Base. Handler gives dog a different command like Lay. As soon as the dog performs this command, the pair moves to 3rd Base. Handler gives dog a different command like, Sit/Stay. Handler then proceeds to Home Plate with back to dog. As soon as Handler reaches Home Plate, the Release Command is given to the dog. If the dog moves from 3rd Base prior to Handler reaching Home Plate or before given the Release command, the pair returns to 3rd Base to repeat the command again. Best 3 times win.

• 11:50 a.m. Hot Dog Dunk: Handlers place Dogs in front of Tub which contains chunks of hot dogs. The first Dog to eat designated number of chunks wins. Small and Medium Dogs need to eat 3 chunks of hot dogs while Large Dogs need to eat 5 chunks. As soon as the dog finishes, handler stands up and raises hand. Handlers cannot feed hot dog pieces to dogs and will be disqualified if they do. First 3 dogs to finish win.

• 12:40 p.m. Toilet Paper Wrap: Handlers place Dogs in front of Tub which contains chunks of hot dogs. The first Dog to eat designated number of chunks wins. Small and Medium Dogs need to eat 3 chunks of hot dogs while Large Dogs need to eat 5 chunks. As soon as the dog finishes, handler stands up and raises hand. Handlers cannot feed hot dog pieces to dogs and will be disqualified if they do. First 3 dogs to finish win.

• 1:00 p.m. Rip Van Winkle Sleep Off: Handlers command Dogs to lie down. The dog who lies down the longest without moving (up to 60 seconds) wins; but there’s a catch! The dogs cannot have heads flopping; tails wagging; or ears wiggling. Handlers can pet, stroke, and coo to their dogs during the competition. The Winner is the dog who “sleeps” the longest.

• 1:20 p.m. Agility: Handlers and their dogs follow a course consisting of going up a ramp; across a balance beam; down a ramp; jump on a teeter-totter; slalom; and finally both go through a hoop tunnel together. Best time wins.

• 1:40 p.m. What? No Ducks!!: Handlers throw balls to designated spots for their dogs to retrieve. Each handler throws a total of three (3) balls. Best time wins.

• 2:30 p.m. Frisbee Throw: Handlers throw Frisbees into the field for their dogs to catch. Winner is Handler/Dog duo that has the farthest Frisbee thrown and caught.

• 2:50 p.m. Doggie Dash: Pairs of dogs race against each other. Handlers hold their Dogs at the Start Line with partner handler at the Finish Line. First Handlers hold dog sand releases them as soon as the Judge says, “Ready, Set, Go!” First dog to cross the finish line to other handle and sits wins. Winner advances to the next round. Dogs will be disqualified if they leave their racing lane. This event will continue until only two dogs are left. The final two will run one more race to determine the ultimate winner.

• 3:10 p.m. Waggiest Tail: Handlers and Dogs compete to see whose dog has the happiest, waggiest tail!

• 3:30 p.m. Most Like Owner: Which Dog resembles his/her Handler the most? Best pair of look-a-likes wins.

The Winter Park Boat Parade and Festival of Lights

The 8th annual Winter Park Holiday Boat Parade is December 10, 2011 on Lakes Virginia and Osceola, hosted by Rotary Club of Winter Park. Come rain or sun to this fun, community-wide water parade with holiday-themed and lighted boats along the lakes’ shorelines. This fundraiser to benefit local non-profits, with food, wine and beer available for purchase.  Admission to The Polasek Gardens for the Parade is free. Limited onsite parking will begin at 4:30 p.m. in The Polasek Gardens for a $5 donation.

Schedule December 10th:

3:30 – 4:30 pm: Water ski show will be on Lake Virginia with viewing on the Rollins College campus by the Jump Ramp in front of the Campus Student Center/Swimming Pool. The area’s leading water skiers will be performing a one-hour ski show to music.

5 pm: Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens. Food, wine and beer, holiday music and a visit from Santa will kick off the holiday the season. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, friends and family to the Polasek to enjoy a Winter Park holiday tradition. Dinky Dock (off Fairbanks Avenue) is another public viewing area for the parade beginning at sundown.

Sundown 5:45 pm: The parade will begin on east shore of Lake Virginia in front of Windsong and proceed clockwise around the shores of Lake Virginia, then proceed through the Palm Canal to Lake Osceola. Boat parade passes in front of judges at Albin Polasek Museum & Gardens and tours around Lake Osceola.

Organizers of the event are seeking resident and business boat entries.  No entry fee for resident boats and all local licensed area boat owners are invited to participate. Boat registration is required with applications available at www.wpboatparade.com or call 407-647-6492.

National Velvelt is playing Nov 3rd

The City of Winter Park and Enzian collaborate to produce a cinema series in Winter Park. The series is called "Popcorn Flicks" and features classic films for the whole family. Popcorn Flicks are usually held on the second Thursday of each month. The films are free and open to the public. Bring a blanket, a picnic or snacks, and some family and friends.

Popcorn Flicks are scheduled for 7PM, but may not start until sunset to provide an optimal viewing experience for our attending guests.They are momentarily halted for the Amtrack train while every one cheers and waves at the train's whistle.

These outdoor screenings are dependent upon Florida's famously unpredictable weather conditions, so keep this in mind. In an effort to avoid cancelling an event, we may wait until 30 minutes prior to the set screening time to officially post a cancellation notice; which will be posted on this page.

Pending home sales index rises from one year ago

A monthly index that tracks pending sales of U.S. resale homes rose in September compared to a year ago, while falling on a month-to-month basis, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) reported today.

NAR's Pending Home Sales Index, which measures real estate sales contracts signed but not yet closed, increased 6.4 percent year over year, to 84.5, in September. The index rose on an annual basis in all four U.S. regions with the Midwest seeing the greatest increase, up 12.3 percent to 71.5.   

In its latest economic forecast, NAR projects 4.955 million sales of resale homes this year (up 1 percent compared to 2010), and 5.169 million existing-home sales in 2012 (up another 4.3 percent), with the existing-home median price falling 4 percent this year, to $165,900, and rising 2.6 percent in 2012.
