2012 Florida Public School Rankings by county-Seminole ranks high

The Florida Department of Education released the new school rankings on Monday. The district-by-district ranking is one of the first in the country and is the first phase of an initiative that will include a list of all schools in the state ranked by number. The schools will fall into elementary, middle and high school categories. The goal of the new public schools rankings is to make it easier for parents to assess the performance of their school districts.

Rankings are determined based on the school’s total points from FACT scores. A Florida public school’s total is the sum of scores for reading, math, science and writing plus the learning gains in reading and math. Scores for learning gains in reading and math among the lowest 25 percent of students in each school is also a factor figuring into the rankings.

The top ten  Florida school districs are St. Johns, Santa Rosa, Martin, Sarasota, Gilchrist, Okaloosa, Seminole, Brevard, Monroe and Sumter. In central Florida, four counties in central Florida ranked among the top. Seminole, Brevard, Sumter and Flagler counties are all considered A public school districts. Seminole ranked 7th and Brevard ranked 8th in the state. Sumter is 10th, while Flagler is 29th in public schools.

• Volusia Public Schools – Ranked 34th, Grade B (tie)

• Osceola Public Schools – Ranked 38th, Grade B

• Lake Public Schools – Ranked 44th, Grade B (tie)

• Marion Public Schools – Ranked 44th, Grade B (tie)

• Polk Public Schools – Ranked 59th, Grade C

The list of individual public schools ranked by number should be published soon according to the Florida Department of Education.
